one of my favorite local minnesota artists is caroline smith - i saw her live in winona, mn at midwest music festival about 4 years ago and fell in love with her stage presence, soul vocals, and strong songwriting. i stumbled across this short film documenting her life growing up in detroit lakes, minnesota and her evolution as a songwriter. be inspired!
Earlier this year I posted about producing an album called "FIVE" with a group in Rochester, Minnesota called Lift Worship. We just wrapped up this EP and it was a blast to work on!
Lift Worship is based out of a local church in Rochester, Minnesota and the team is primarily made up of volunteers. It was an honor to work with these volunteers as we wrote parts together!
My role with this project was song form and arrangement, creating sounds, playing guitars live, and musically directing the band. The project was engineered, mixed, and mastered by Jason Gerdt & Brent Thomas.
The album released Christmas Day 2016 and you can stream it below via embedded Spotify playlist!
I recently had the chance to go check out this new sensation called "floating". Seems simple, and the concept is. You crawl into a tank filled with 800 pounds of epsom salt, lay down, and float - preferably in the dark with no music. It's a meditative experience for you to recollect your thoughts and find relaxation and refreshment.
Nalu Float, Rochester, Minnesota's only floating center, was generous enough to have me come in and try floating out, and write a piece on my experience. I don't need to get too personal, but although I was a little claustrophobic at first, I had a nostalgic (odd right?), restful time inside the floating tank. It was an interesting experience to be pulled away from the chaos of everyday routine, and be alone with your thoughts while floating in that trippy, silky water.
Here's a video explaining a little more about floating (this video isn't from Nalu, but similar concept):
Based on my experience while floating, the piece I wrote is below.
You can check out Nalu Float's website here and try it out for yourself.
I was recently commissioned by Trinity Live Sound (an AVL company about to announce it's opening), to write an original song for their company's website visitors. I had a blast writing the tune!
It's titled "Electricity". Check it out below and if you like it, share it!
Two of my best friends, Cameron and Trevor Bartlett, along with the talented Erik Moody, make up a band called Author. They make beautiful music paired with real lyricism - struggles, problems, emotions - things you can relate with.
They recently released a full length titled Of Brighter Days and are set to release their next full length this fall.
Check out their music and if you dig it, give a few bucks. Let's be real - you're saving hundreds with your Spotify subscription so the least you can do is spare some cash for the striving musician.
The Breathe album, titled "ADVANCE" will be releasing April 25th. Can't wait to share these tunes.
Over the past two years I have had the joy of leading worship with this team of students every Monday at Breathe - a gathering designed for college students to meet with and worship God. After traveling around with this team and leading worship, growing together in our skills, and exploring the world of songwriting and spontaneity, we felt our next step was to capture the songs God was giving us.
We are deep into the recording process now and expect digital and physical copies of the 5 song all-original album to be available in late April 2016. Our good friend Zach Foty is engineering and producing the record and it is being mastered by Dale Becker Mastering.
Perks are still available from our Indiegogo fundraising campaign if you are interested in supporting this project. If so, click here.
